Schapendoes: Energetic and Fun-Loving
Dutch Smoushonds are a very intelligent, active and sociable dog that enjoys spending time with their family. They’re very easy to train, and they thrive when given plenty of daily exercise, preferably in the form of running.
They are good matches for first-time owners, but they should be prepared for a high level of exercise and training to keep them happy and healthy. They’re very adaptable, and they do well in a variety of environments. However, they have a strong prey drive and may be inclined to chase smaller pets like ferrets, guinea pigs and rabbits.
While not as common as the other Dutch dog breeds, the Kooikerhondje is a distinctive little spaniel-type dog with a very Dutch heritage. Their ancestors were used as working dogs, and the little guys are even seen in paintings by Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Vermeer from the 17th century. Today, they’re beloved sporting dogs and family pets. These pups are devoted and friendly with their humans, but they can be wary of strangers.
